Hosts ìEconomic Summitî with Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey
and John Berthoud, President of National Taxpayers Union Tabor
Says Simplified Tax Code Hot Button for Voters Kernersville,
NC ñ Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey was a guest of the Tabor campaign and spoke to the crowd about tort reform as well as the possible implementation of a flat tax to replace the Internal Revenue Service. Dr. John Berthoud discussed the pros and cons of a flat tax versus a national consumption tax. Both argued that either would be better than the current tax code. The ìEconomic Summitî brought a wide range of people from all across North Carolina. With attendees from as far away as the coast to the mountains as well as from out of state, all were interested what impact true tax reform would have on local economies and households. Several of the participants argued for a ìFairTaxî that would pursue a ìconsumption taxî rather than an income tax. Many thought this would prevent loopholes and would be a more fair way of assessing taxes on everyone, no matter what their income. Tabor was impressed with the depth of knowledge that attendees had on the tax issues. ìI have always believed that real solutions lie with real people. As this event shows, common sense is what is needed in Washington. If politicians would listen to regular people we would have a better system in America already. I know who I will be listening to when I go to Washington. The people of this state already have a grasp of what needs to be done and I will fight for them,î said Tabor. Tabor indicated that he hoped to make the ìEconomic Summitî an annual event. ìMaybe next year we will take this on the road to more people. It is important that everyone hear of the possibilities for real reform. People are tired of politicians only talking about tax reform. Well, with the help of Art Laffer, Stephen Moore and Grover Norquist we will make it happen.î One surprise guest was Philip Hinson from Atlanta, GA. Philip is the State Director of Georgiaís Americans For Fair Taxation. He joined in the discussion and enlightened the group about HR 25. ìRichard Burr is a co-sponsor of this bill and I plan to do the same,î said Tabor.
